About the Artist
Susan Kliewer
It wasn’t too long ago that Susan presented a
program at Rotary. Many of you already know her, but for those who
don’t:
One of the best-known, and most prolific artists in
Sedona is Susan Kliewer. A painter during her early years, Susan began
working in clay in the late 1980’s. After several years of working in a
local bronze foundry, she moved on to work with renowned sculptors James
Muir and Joe Beeler, among others. Eventually, Susan began to create
her own sculptures.
Susan’s sensitive sculptures of Native Americans
have won awards in many juried competitions. One of her sculptures is a
ten-foot statue of Sedona Schnebly, for whom the city of Sedona is
named. After winning a citywide art competition, the statue graces the
entrance of the Sedona Public Library.
Recently, the 29th Annual Showcase for
Member Artists was held at the Sedona Arts Center. In that juried
exhibition, Susan Kliewer’s bronze sculpture,
“Southern Plains Dancer,”
depicting a traditional dance of Cheyenne hunters, was awarded the Best
of Show. Susan’s work has won many other art competitions and her
limited and special editions routinely sell quickly. Susan’s work
usually doubles in value before the last edition is sold.
The Pueblo Bronze sculpture, “The Mischievous Ones”
that we are awarding to the winner of our charity drawing is large,
quite heavy and Susan has personalized it with the seal of Rotary
International, and a small plaque naming the Rotary Club of Sedona.
