Catherine Chapman Honorary Paul Harris Fellow

The club recognized Red Rock High School graduate Catherine Chapman, who received an Honorary Paul Harris Fellow award, thanks to Rotarian John Lothrop (right) who donated PHF points.  Catherine is majoring in pre-law and psychology at Pepperdine University and graduates in 2019. She was previously a Rotary Exchange Student, studying in Florence, Italy. She was recently an intern for the U.S. Department of State in the office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement and interns next at the U.S. Embassy in Colombia. She thanks John and the club for supporting her efforts. "Rotary is a huge part of my life and I look forward to continuing the journey."

Meeting Highlights

Exchange Student tackling challenges and enjoying Switzerland

Our Rotary Exchange Student Jazmin Santillan sent pictures and wrote about her experiences so far in Switzerland. While it has been challenging for her to learn the German language, she is now better able to understand the Swiss-German dialect. And her teachers all say she is doing great! Jazmin said Christmas there was another great experience. "Surprisingly, I wasn’t homesick at all for Christmas but I think that has a lot to do with my host family. They are really great and make me feel like I am apart of the family. They even got me a Swiss army knife with my name engraved into it as a present and told me that I’m officially Swiss now. That was a really great feeling. They all shook hands with each other to say thank you for gifts but I gave them all hugs and their reaction to that was funny." In the photo opposite, Jazmin (middle row, far left) was able to meet up with her exchange friends while visiting the Matterhorn. She will change host families Jan. 10.

Gills host Brazilian luncheon for exchange student Gui Garcia

Over the holidays, Rotarian David Gill and his wife Betty prepared a delicious special Brazilian Black Bean Stew called feijoada and traditional accompaniments for a luncheon honoring our exchange student Gui Garcia. Enjoying the meal were his current host family, Larry and Cindy Parker (far right), Cindy is soon to be inducted into the Village Rotary Club, and his first host family, David and Jennette Bill (far left).

Get your Bashas' Card--another way to support your club

Bashas' shopping cards function as debit cards. You load them with money and use them to make all your Bashas' purchases. When you use your card the club gets six percent of the value of your transactions. Cards are pre-loaded with $20, so that is your price to purchase. The club receives about $1,000 each year from this program. Please let family members and others know this is another way they can support our efforts. Come on new members, get your Bashas' card and support your club. It really is free money! Contact Dick at ryoungberg5@gmail.com or 928-282-3800.
