High School students share Rotary Youth Leadership experiences

About 13 Red Rock High School students shared with their parents and club members the importance of RYLA activities held Feb. 12 at RRHS Performing Arts Center. RYLA, a three-day leadership camp, is sponsored by Rotary Club of Sedona and is held annually. Club Youth Services Director Jennette Bill said the presentation was the best organized yet. Kudos to the students for a great effort!
Meeting Highlights

Rotarian Wendy Knight educates club members about hospice

Club member Wendy Knight, community educator of Hospice of Northern Arizona, says hospice care is a team approach for individuals in advanced stages of illness. She said patients are assigned a nurse, a social worker, and home health aide and chaplain if they choose. Care is designed to support all family members during the illness. Wendy is working to educate the community and healthcare providers so patients can receive hospice care earlier. "The earlier an individual receives care, the more opportunity there is to stabilize a medical condition. Some patients actually improve and can be discharged from hospice care."  She adds that hospice care is a benefit paid through Medicare and Medicaid as well as most private insurances.

Kennedy Shosted awarded Rotary Scholarship

Red Rock High School honor student Kennedy Shosted was recognized for her academic achievements during the club's  Jan. 22 meeting. Kennedy received a $1,000 Rotary Scholarship to attend the college of her choice. She plans to major in biology and onto medical school at either University of California San Francisco or University of Washington to major in pediatric oncology. "I hope to make significant impact in the lives of families as well as the medical community." Kennedy also thanked the club for all it does for high school students. Helping her celebrate are her parents James Shosted and Terra Derfee and RRHS Teacher Paul Pavlich and check presentation by Club President Holli Ploog.

Ismael Garcia named Rotary Student Ambassador

Sedona Red Rock Junior High School student Ismael Garcia was recognized as a Rotary Student Ambassador during the club's Jan. 22 meeting. Social Studies Teacher Andy Galley said over the last two years Ismael has continuously exemplified criteria of the Rotary Four Way Test. "Ismael stands for service without hesitation. He's always thinking about everyone else." Club President Holli Ploog presented Ismael with a framed certificate of honor. He said his favorite subject is social studies "because it's how we interact with each other." Also there to share in his celebration were his parents Mauricio and Cecilia Garcia. Congratulations Ismael!
